Maritime Mooters Sail Home
The 8th Annual International Maritime Arbitration Moot Competition 2007 was hosted by Victoria University and Murdoch University School of Law and held at VU from 22-27 June.
Victoria University’s team was also "Highest Ranked Team in the General Rounds". Ms Kate Lewins, from Murdoch University, who was the Moot Director, said: "The standard of the competition was extremely high. The students had clearly devoted an enormous amount of effort to their research and preparation, and their advocacy skills were admirable." Roger Derrington S.C. one of the moot adjudicators thanked VU’s Bruno Zeller and the students at Victoria University "for their efforts in the production of the successful outcome". He said: "The contribution of the Law School and the students at Victoria University cannot be under estimated." He said he was especially impressed with "the courtesy, manners and dedication of the VU students whether they were mooting or assisting". "They made it an absolute delight to be there and further enhanced the ever increasing reputation of their School." Each team mooted four times in the general rounds, after which the top eight teams progressed to the quarter finals. The Grand Final was held in the Federal Court in Melbourne, before the Honourable Justice J Allsop, David Martin-Clark a London Arbitrator and barrister who has flown into Australia for the moot, and Ron Salter, Consultant in Maritime Law to DLA Phillips Fox. Universities represented at the competition were: University of Queensland, University of Technology, Sydney, The University of Hong Kong, University of Newcastle, Murdoch University, Universitas Indonesia, Victoria University, National Law University, Jodhpur, La Trobe University, International Islamic University Malaysia, Queensland University of Technology, China University of Political Science and Law, Padjadjaran University, Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University, India, Gujarat National Law University, India, MARA University of Technology, Malaysia, and Hidayatullah National Law University, India.
