Tourism industry must respond to climate change: Lipman
Geoffrey Lipman, Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) will give an address entitled 'Tourism and Climate Change: Beyond the Triple Bottom Line', in Melbourne on Wednesday 17th October. It will be his inaugural address as an Adjunct Professor in the Centre for Hospitality and Tourism Research at Victoria University, and draws on the findings from UNWTO's recent climate change summit. Lipman will look at the emerging global framework responding to climate change and compare the development, challenges and opportunities today with the green movement in the 1990s. He will argue that the slow pick up by the sector of the green agenda cannot be repeated with climate and proposes a new approach of "quadruple bottom line" for tourism operations that must be rigorously pursued by the industry and government strategists. He will specifically explore the important role of air transport in the growth of the global tourism phenomena; the role of aviation in climate change; and the importance for countries like Australia of a climate responsive environment for its continuing growth.
