Staff and AssociatesResearchers from the Centre for Tourism and Services Research and Sustainable Tourism CRC work together on a number of projects.
Top of page In addition to the Research Associates the CTSR is supported by a Research Leaders Forum. This forum is comprised of Professorial and Senior Associates who provide research leadership in the area of Hospitality and Tourism research. Research Leaders Adjunct Professor Ian MacFarlane Adjunct Professor Geoffrey Lipman The CTSR has a critical mass of researchers. A total of 63 researchers from across the university are registered as CTSR associates. Of these academics 27 are currently actively engaged in externally funded projects and/or attribute their work through the Centre. The associates are listed with the CTSR active associates highlighted. Key centre research teams include the Events team (Jago, Deery, Bergin-Seers, O’Mahony), the Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises team (Breen, Bergin-Seers, Jago), Destination Management (King, Whitelaw, Jago, Pearlman), Applied Economics (Divisekera, Fernando, Turner and Vu), Food and Wine (Deery, O’Mahony), the Cultural Tourism team (O’Mahony, Quiazon, Polonsky and Kay) and ICT team (McGrath, Sharda and Burgess). The CTSR defines ‘research active’ in this context as those associates who have registered with the centre and who have engaged with the centre through research projects or publication alignment. It should be noted that some researchers may have aligned their research with the CTSR without the knowledge of the CTSR staff. Internal
Ian Macfarlane is the owner of IM Strategy, a marketing strategy consultancy based in Sydney.
Over the last 8 years he has focused mainly on the tourism industry and developed the following campaigns:
His experience traverses the spectrum of marketing. He has undertaken a number of assignments and projects which have included; network management and distribution as well as product development, pricing and quality assurance. His current clients include Tourism Australia, Tourism New South Wales, Tourism Northern Territory and the Co-operative Research Center for Sustainable Tourism. Ian has B. Comm., MBA and M. Phil degrees. He is on the Advisory Board of University of South Australia’s Ehrenberg–Bass Institute for Marketing Sciences
Geoffrey Lipman Assistant Director General of the UNWTO. He is Chair of Green Globe 21 the responsible/sustainable tourism group and of Green Global Village (GGV) its consultancy arm. He is President of the International Council of Tourism Partners (ICTP) – a platform connecting socially responsible tourism organizations and people. He has served as Tourism Envoy for the Administrator of the UNDP and is Tourism Advisor to the Commonwealth Business Council & the World Economic Forum. He is a Board Member of Great Canadian Railway Company. He was the first President of the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the global business leaders’ forum. Between 1990 and 1999 he shaped its agenda during its growth from 10-100 members and the positioning of Travel & Tourism as the world’s largest industry as well as its Millennium Vision for open markets, elimination of barriers and sustainable development. Geoffrey Lipman spent: 20 years with the International Air Transport Association (IATA), where he was Executive Director and Head of Government Affairs, later as Executive Director of IFAPA, a foundation representing passengers & as partner in Global Aviation Associates, a strategic airline consultancy specialising in government relations and competition matters. He has written and lectured around the world on tourism strategy, sustainability and airline liberalization, co-authored books on opening up European Aviation and established a Think Tank on Free Trade in the Air. He was a member of 2 European Union High Level Commissions - on Airline Liberalization and on Tourism Employment as well as a member of the UK Roundtable on Sustainable Development. He is a Fellow of the Tourism Society and the Australian Tourism Research Association; Member of the President of Zambia’s Business Advisory Council and the Ethiopia Think Tank and Senior Tourism Research Fellow at George Washington University in the US.
