The Small Business Research Unit conducts small business-related studies at the regional, national and international level. It promotes and supports the valuable contribution small business makes to the Australian economy by:

  • assembling a broad range of business expertise, both practical and academic, to conduct industry-focused research and small business development activities
  • sharing knowledge about leading-edge research on small business with members of the business community, government and business service providers
  • networking and developing partnerships with industry, government, education institutions and business support agencies to improve business processes and performance
  • delivering research and information services.

Projects include access to government business assistance services, access to government procurement contracts in the Asia-Pacific region, advisory services for small to medium enterprises and good practice in the tourism sector.

The Unit also has an advisory role where staff provide input to government and industry committees.

Professor John Breen heads the Unit.
